The graduate Ph.D. program in Vision Science began over 75 years ago. Today it comprises 37 well-funded faculty members from 11 departments, including optometry, psychology, public health, molecular and cell biology, neurobiology, neuroscience, infectious disease and immunology, bioengineering, computer science, electrical engineering and chemical engineering.

The VSG leadership is comprised of a Chair also known as the Head Graduate Advisor, a Graduate Affairs Officer, and six or more Program Advisors – collectively the Group Advisory Council.

Faculty Membership

All UC Berkeley Faculty members who are interested in vision science are encouraged to participate in the Vision Science Group (VSG). Active Core and Affiliate members of the VSG enjoy the benefit of training PhD students toward a degree in Vision Science. Currently, our PhD students are supported by the VSG for the first 2-3 years of the program, after which time the research advisor assumes full support.
