Dr. Roorda Receives Alcon Award

Austin Roorda

Professor Austin Roorda

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dr. Austin Roorda, UC Berkeley professor of Optometry and Vision Science, and member of the UCB/UCSF Joint Graduate Program in Bioengineering, has been selected to receive the 2016 Alcon Award from The Alcon Research Institute for outstanding contributions to the field of vision research.

“This award is one of the most prestigious and high profile awards within vision research; an exceptional achievement for an exceptional scholar,” says Dr. John Flanagan, Professor and Dean for the UC Berkeley School of Optometry.

Dr. Roorda is a pioneer in the development and use of advanced ophthalmoscopic systems that use adaptive optics and eye tracking to study structure and function in the living human eye on a cellular scale. He and his collaborators use their systems for a wide range of research, from the investigation of the neural circuits in the human retina that facilitate our exquisite color and spatial vision, to clinical trials that evaluate the efficacy of treatments for blinding eye disease. His research is generously funded by the National Institutes of Health through a Bioengineering Research Partnership and more recently through the National Eye Institute’s Audacious Goals Initiative. He is a fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Optical Society of America and the American Academy of Optometry.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Roorda for achieving this great honor!
