I’M FROM: I grew up in Houston, TX, but call the San Francisco Bay Area home now.
BEFORE VS: I earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin with a biomedical engineering focus. After working as a Product Manager developing software for the Consumer Goods/Pharmaceutical industry, I earned my Doctor of Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley. I worked as a research optometrist and clinician for several years before being awarded the NIH/NEI K12 award, a Clinician Scientist training award which allowed me to complete a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology, and now allows me to pursue a PhD in Vision Science.
WHY I’M HERE: I enjoy patient care and research, and I feel there is no better way for me to combine the two than to be involved in human-based scientific research. I have been fortunate to be involved in clinical research for more than a decade now, and I view the PhD under the K-training as an opportunity to work my way to research independence.
MY RESEARCH: I am particularly interested in understanding the role and impact of pharmaceutical agents on disease development and resolution on the ocular surface, as well as how sex hormones may influence those pathways.
MY HOBBIES Maybe it’s the researcher in me, but I love exploring the Bay Area: the cultures, the foods, the museums, the parks….you name it! Having two active kids really give me no choice, either. 🙂
