Immune responses to alloantigens are complex and often lead to transplant rejection and tissue damage. The ocular compartment has been known to be very successful in regulating these, enjoying increased graft survival and function. However, there are still instances when these mechanisms are not functional and ocular damage can lead to blindness. Because the ocular tissue can be easily accessible, direct visualization of immune responses can be studied in detail to understand immune mechanisms of alloantigen tolerance or rejection in the eye. Our laboratory has used these techniques to understand the biology of transplant immunology and developed new approaches to therapies.
