Pocket Doctors: Disease Diagnosis with Mobile Phones
Light microscopy remains a central tool for disease diagnosis. Direct imaging of diseased tissues as well as quantification of pathogens in blood, sputum, and stool can enable rapid screening and diagnosis of multiple diseases. However, microscopy traditionally requires advanced equipment and skilled users not available outside of well-equipped laboratories and hospitals. In recent years, mobile phones have emerged as powerful tools for gathering clinically-relevant information from patients. This talk will describe ongoing work that uses mobile phones as light microscopes. By combining mobile phone microscopy with hardware and software engineering, we are aiming to expand access to basic diagnosis and screening for diseases that range from blood-borne pathogens to diabetic retinopathy.
