The Science of Psychedelics in California Magazine
By Liza Shevchuk

The UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP), led by Professor Michael Silver, was recently featured in California Magazine. The article, titled "Horizon: Psychedelics to Shed Light on Sight" by Blake Edgar, explores the Center's groundbreaking research on how psychedelics, such as psilocybin (the active compound in “magic mushrooms”) influence human perception and the brain’s reliance on past experiences (or “priors”) to construct visual perception.
“Understanding the actions of psychedelics at a neuroscientific level will generate insights into how they’re working as medicines and will hopefully help us develop more effective and precise treatments for mental health disorders,” said Dr. Silver.
As reported by California Magazine, this represents a historic milestone for UC Berkeley because "Silver is leading a study that for the first time in Berkeley’s history will include administering a psychedelic substance to human subjects."
