About the Position

The multi-departmental Vision Science Group on the Berkeley campus is recruiting a full time Assistant, Associate or Full Specialist to work on bioinformatics and data analysis for diverse research projects. We are seeking a highly motivated and hardworking professional who can work well in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting that involves interfacing with multiple laboratories with varied interests. Researchers in the Vision Science group are housed in the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science, the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute and other units on the campus.

Duties

The Data Analyst-Bioinformatics Assistant, Associate or Full Specialist will work within the Vision Sciences Group and provide services to users of the NIH funded CORE Grant for Vision Science. The primary duties will involve assisting, advising and training researchers in the Vision Science Group to 1) construct and maintain pipelines for standard preprocessing tasks of single-cell or bulk RNAseq or genomic data sets and large imaging or electrophysiology data sets, 2) carry out data normalization, batch correction, dimensionality reduction, clustering, visualization, and differential gene expression analysis, and 3) develop computational pipelines in the form of Jupyter notebooks (R and Python) that contain both editable code and extensive commentary, and maintain them in a common repository.

A successful candidate will become part of a vibrant community of researchers and have the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of collaborative projects in vision science and neuroscience. They will also establish and nurture relationships with research groups through 1:1 and group meetings. From time to time, duties will also include oral and written dissemination of analyses for meetings and for publication. The position holds excellent career development opportunities including, but not limited to: co-authorship on publications, participation in symposia and conferences, and networking opportunities within and outside campus with vision scientists.
