Drs. Austin Roorda and Ren Ng named in the 2026 National Geographic 33.

We are proud to share that Professor Emeritus Austin Roorda has been named one of the 2026 National Geographic 33, a distinction recognizing 33 extraordinary individuals around the world who are advancing bold ideas and meaningful solutions.

Dr. Roorda was honored alongside Ren Ng, Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Berkeley, for their groundbreaking work at the frontiers of vision science. Their team recently developed a novel laser-based method that activates specific photoreceptor cells in the eye, allowing test subjects to temporarily perceive a previously unseen color – named “olo,” described as “the tealest teal you’ve never seen.”

The National Geographic 33 highlights innovators whose work reflects imagination, urgency, and impact. Dr. Roorda’s recognition places him among a global cohort leading change across disciplines. Please join us in congratulating Drs. Roorda and Ng on this well-deserved honor!
