Dre FazioLiu, OD

WHERE I'M FROM
Sunnyvale, CA
BEFORE VS
I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. From there I moved across the country to complete my Doctor of Optometry degree at New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA. A patient once said I slowly hitchhiked my way back to California as I made a pitstop to do a residency in ocular disease at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System. I also served as preceptor and a lab instructor at The Ohio State University. Once arriving back in California, I practiced optometry in a variety of settings for nearly 10 years – from a private ophthalmology office to teaching students and residents at the VA Central California Health Care System to and becoming an optometry director at a non-profit community health organization. For the last 2 years, I’ve moved into the research optometry field and gained valuable experience working with Dr. Meng C. Lin and the incredible team at the Clinical Research Center as a Clinical Research Fellow.
MY RESEARCH
I am currently employing a machine learning model to quantify the morphological characteristics of Meibomian Glands and how they can be affected based on systemic and environmental factors (e.g. allergies, ethnicities, age).
MY GOALS
At the heart of my goals is my passion to work at the intersection of technology and healthcare. This has been a place I’ve been trying to get to since graduating optometry school. I aim to bridge the gap between clinical care and the use of modern technology while utilizing the latest tools to produce impactful research to help clinicians better understand their patients.
MY HOBBIES
Despite my name being Dr. Dre I am not a rapper (surprise!) but I enjoy strumming my guitar and trying to sing on key, hikes and long walks with my spouse and dog, cycling, picking up heavy stuff then putting it back down, roasting coffee, and cooking.
