Dr. Cotter's Abstract

Non-surgical Management of Childhood Intermittent Exotropia: A Current Perspective

Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is the most common form of divergent strabismus in childhood. Management includes surgical and non-surgical interventions, and there is controversy regarding the optimal timing and best method of treatment. The rationale for non-surgical interventions is that they may improve the child’s ability to control their IXT, preserve stereoacuity, and delay or eliminate the need for surgery. The Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) have conducted randomized clinical trials evaluating two forms of non-surgical treatments for IXT: part-time patching and spectacles with over-minus lenses. They also have conducted 3-year natural history studies of IXT in two age cohorts. The results from these studies will be summarized and the presenter’s clinical perspective provided.
