The Young Vision Scientist

The Young Vision Scientist podcast is for prospective students, vision scientists, enthusiasts, and anyone with an interest in vision science. Each episode will feature an interview with a current vision science PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. Listeners will learn about their most recent research questions and findings and hear conversational insights about cutting-edge research and new advances within the interdisciplinary study of vision science.

About the Episode

Welcome to the first episode of the Young Vision Scientist podcast with your host, Reem Almagati! In this episode, we talk to Christian Shewmake, who is a rising second year in the Vision Science program. Christian shares how he got into vision science, his research in computational neuroscience and the 'problem of representation,' and the specific questions he's attempting to answer, especially in artificial neural networks and machine learning. He also shares his tips or advice that he's learned over his time in the program.

About Christian

Christian studied biomedical engineering, applied math, and computer science at Washington University in St. Louis. After that, he joined Koniku in Berkeley and designed neural wetware chips to 'digitize olfaction'.

Since then, Christian has continued studying neural representations of natural signals through his master's degree in Mathematics and Systems Science at WashU and his current research position in the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience. In between, he has lived and worked in London, Beijing, and Austin.
