Title
The Tear Film and Dry Eye States — A Fertile Research Area
Abstract
Dry eye states are now acknowledged to be far more prevalent than previously considered. Further, many ambient conditions including contact lens wearing stress the tear film, resulting in induced dry eye states. This presentation will present an overview of recent research findings relevant to dry eye states and their diagnosis and treatment including: the potential and limitations of tear film break-up and ocular surface staining; the roles of interferometry and the lipid layer; the correlation between lipid layer thickness and dry eye symptoms; a new device and methodology for the evaluation of meibomian gland (MG) function; new data on MG secretion by section of the lower lid; time for a single optimally secreting MG to again secrete following drainage of available oil: role of lid wiper epitheliopathy in dry eye; and the lack of correlation of history with objective signs. Treatment procedures for dry eye and related research questions including the use of lubricity agents, the role of humidity, the transmission rates of heat applied to the lower lid, treatments to assist MG function, and medications will be reviewed. Specific areas identified as requiring further research will be suggested..
