Welcome New ViSUR Students

The Vision Science Summer Undergraduate Research (ViSUR) Program is an 8-week, in-person, fellowship program that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to explore all aspects of the human eye through the connection of neurobiology, bioengineering, public health, psychology, and more. We are pleased to welcome four new students to this year's program: Monica Stapor, Jessica Lien, Kendall Kohout, and Angeles Ramirez. Read more about each student below!

Monica Stapor

Monica is a third-year at SUNY Binghamton University majoring in Biological Science. With a strong passion for science and healthcare, she has set her sight on becoming an optometrist and making a positive impact on the vision health of her community. One specific area that she is interested in is ocular disease, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. The emphasis the ViSUR program places on research and graduate study aligns perfectly with Monica's career goals.

Jessica Lien

Jessica is a second-year undergraduate student at UC Berkeley majoring in Molecular Cell Biology and Business Administration. She has explored the role of eye movements in amblyopic vision in the Levi Lab and is excited to further explore vision science through this program.

Kendall Kohout

Kendall is a rising fourth-year at the University of Rochester with a major in Biomedical Engineering. She hopes to obtain a PhD and pursue work in the ocular diagnostic device industry. When applying to the ViSUR program, she was particularly interested in the human vision opportunities as all of her work has been performed in a macaques model.

Angeles Ramirez

Angeles is a rising third-year in Biological Sciences at California State University, Stanislaus. Her long-term career goals are to first obtain a doctor of optometry license and then complete a PhD in Vision Science. She is especially interested in the research fields of low-vision, myopia, and congenital eye defects. Her hope is to ultimately become a licensed optometrist as well as conduct applied research to correct visual defects while teaching graduate students in these fields. Angeles applied to ViSUR in order to further gain experience in optometry, to gain experience in research, and to learn more about the different facets of optical issues and treatments. She also loves the atmosphere and creativity that comes with working in a team with different backgrounds but the same interests, in this case, the research they will do.
