The Polse Lab: Clinical, Patient-based Research

The Polse Laboratory is focused primarily on patient-based studies that explore the effects of disease, environment, and medical intervention on the human cornea.

Fluid Dynamics, Contact Lenses, and the Cornea

Our research team explores how contact lens wear affects corneal structure and function, such as understanding the effects of fluid movement under a contact lens and the effects of tear flow on the cornea. In order to carry out studies related to the effects of tear flow, we have developed clinical protocols, designed methodological strategies, and identified sensitive markers for monitoring corneal response.

Collaborative Research

Our research approach requires a collaborative effort between basic and clinical scientists, including faculty from Optometry (see the UCB-CRC), Chemical Engineering, and Biostatistics.

Research Facilities

We have equipment and facilities to conduct complete, comprehensive eye examinations of patients and research subjects. We also have referral access to the Clinic facilities of the School of Optometry, which includes a pathology module. Potential participants in our research studies must all undergo clinical assessments before we can determine whether they meet the recruitment and eligibility critieria for each study and can accept them into our research projects. In addition, our lab facilities include several innovative instruments that have been specially developed in conjunction with our Optometry Electronics Shop, Machine Shop, and other researchers.
