Graduate Program: PhD and MS in Vision Science

gonglabpicThe UC Berkeley Graduate Program in Vision Science emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of vision science research through broad exposure to the basic concepts and techniques used in specialized fields. Offering MS and PhD degrees, students are engaged in both laboratory-based and clinical research, choosing research advisors whose research matches their own interests.

Program Enrollment

Currently more than 40 pre-doctoral graduate students are enrolled in the training program leading to a PhD (Vision Science) degree. There are also more than 30 postdoctoral fellows training in the laboratories of the faculty of the Group in Vision Science.

Success of the Program

Of the more than 160 trainees who have received research degree training through 2003, the majority are now active vision researchers with independent research funding; more than half hold faculty appointments at more than 25 different colleges and universities (see Alumni).

Multidisciplinary Research

Current investigations include interdisciplinary projects spanning:

Bioengineering
Biostatistics
Contact Lenses
Corneal Surface Mapping
Infant Vision
Molecular and Cell Biology
Myopia
Neurophysiology
Ocular Infections
Psychophysics
Robotics
Spatial Navigation
3D Computer Modeling
and many other fields (see Faculty Research).

The Vision Science Program is headquartered in the School of Optometry (website) with affiliated faculty from diverse departments within UC Berkeley.
