VS298 - Oxyopia Research Seminar Series

Course Requirements

This course is compulsory for all first-year Vision Science students.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to a range of different research fields, researchers (including fellow graduate students), and research presentation styles.

Gong Lab 3

As part of this course, post-seminar lunches are funded to provide students with the opportunity to meet with visiting speakers. Enrolled students are expected to attend at least one of these lunches. For students with teaching or other commitments that preclude attendance, it is possible to enroll in this course in a later year; this arrangement should be made by negotiation with the Course/Oxyopia coordinator. This course is optional for advanced students although attendance of the Oxyopia Seminar series is strongly encouraged.

In enrolling for this course, you are required to choose between pass/fail and letter grade options that have slightly different course requirements, as outlined below. Both options have an attendance requirement of 90% or more in the regular Friday seminar series.

Failure to meet the requirements for your selected option will result in a grade of "fail," or an "incomplete" in extenuating circumstances. Please consider your other time commitments when enrolling in this course.

Pass-Fail Grade Option

Register for Vision Science 298, Section 1, and enroll for 1 unit and the Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory grade option.

  • Students must choose a seminar for which they will be responsible for identifying and circulating a relevant publication from the speaker (electronic copies preferred) to fellow graduate students. This information should also be provided to the course coordinator. Sufficient time should be allowed for the review of the selected publication before the seminar. See Current Oxyopia for current seminar titles, speakers, and date information.

Letter Grade Option

Register for Vision Science 298, Section 2, and enroll for 2 units for the letter grade option.

  • Students must choose a seminar for which they will be responsible for identifying and circulating a relevant publication from the speaker (electronic copies preferred) to fellow graduate students. This information should also be provided to the course coordinator. Sufficient time should be allowed for the review of the selected publication prior to the seminar. See Current Oxyopia for current seminar title, speaker and date information.
  • Each student must critically review two seminars of their choosing; the reviews should not exceed 2,000 words each.
