Title
The use of visual information in letter identification and reading
Abstract
Skilled adult readers, in contrast to beginners, show little increase in reading latencies as a function of the number of letters in words up to seven letters. The information extraction strategy underlying such efficiency with word identification is still largely unknown, and methods that allow direct tracking of the letter information extraction through time are needed to fully address this question. We examined the space-time use of letter information while reading using the Bubbles technique. I will provide evidence that line terminations are the areas of letters used most effectively to identify individual letters; that the upper half of the fourth, third, and first letters are the areas of words used most effectively to read words of all lengths; and that neither letters, nor words have to be processed in parallel.
