Title

Functional Optical Imaging of Retina Reveals Patterns of the Activated Retina and the Ganglion Cell Axon Arcades

Abstract

Retinal function maps are of great importance in understanding the mechanisms underlying normal physiology, as well as in diagnosis and monitoring of retinal pathology. A novel mapping approach applies non-invasive functional optical imaging to the retina, by monitoring retinal reflectance changes in response to photic activation. Exploring the intact retina of anesthetized macaque monkey in vivo, we found a new functional signal localized to the axonal arches of the retinal ganglion cells emanating from the activated retinal area. We also show that functional imaging of the monkey retina in response to patterned photic stimulation yields slow intrinsic signals whose spatial patterns co-localize with patterns of retinal illumination, imaged with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, independent component analysis (ICA) dissected these distinct but simultaneous intrinsic signal components and revealed their spatio-temporal characteristics.
